Ridgeway - Uffington to Foxhill (1st May 2006)

Shorter section this time, only about 6 miles, but we're moving forward to completing the Ridgeway bit by bit

Retraced our steps across Uffington Castle, back to where we left the ridgeway last time. Yet again it's very windy on Uffington, is it ever still up there? Then turned right and set of along the ridgeway.

Stopped off to have a quick look at Waylands Smithy, looks nice except that the farmer has planted rape in the adjoining fields, hardly Englands "green and pleasant land".

The later stages are practically road surface, and there is more motor vehicle and bike activity now that the ridgeway is open to traffic.

Stopped at the Shepards Rest (Foxhill), well that's the nearest name on the map, not sure if the pub is strictly in the village. Cups of tea, I had the "spicy chicken" bagguette, bit disappointed as the spicy chicken seems to be plain chicken with a spicy mayonesse.

After the rain of the last few days, the rock hard chalk surface has turned in a grey mush, really bad to walk in, very much a two steps forward, one step back. However we were lucky on the weather, set off thinking it was going to be a wet walk, got there to find the weather breaking and had sunny intervals throughout the walk, until just the last stage down Foxhill when it clouded over again. It started to spit while we were in the pub.
