Ridgeway - Barbury Castle to Avebury (24th June 2006)
Another part of the Ridgeway walked today
When we left home the weather looked at best "Ok", but as we drove towards Avebury to drop of the first car, it just got brighter and brighter
- oh, oh, I was thinking as I'd only brought a couple of bottles of water, not my usual 3.5 litres (yes, I do get through a LOT of water on walks!!)
Anyhow dropped the car off, then headed over to the start point as Barbury Castle car park. By there the temperature was well into the mid-20's
- Ok, not even warm for some people / places, but way high enough for me
First section of the ridgeway after Barbury is to all purposes, "road", it's hard, metalled surface. Hard on the feet :-(
Lovely walking weather, though any bits of shade were well appreciated
We must be getting better at walking, came round the shoulder of a hill, "That's Avebury down there", and I was completely surprised, the 6 miles had just gone by
So we turned off the Ridgeway to walk into Avebury along the Wessex Way
Gasping for a cup of tea, we decided to go to the resturant next to the National Trust visitors centre, and as a treat have a cake as well
- disappointment, they've changed, and now most of their "cakes" seem to be purchased from the standard "bulk" food suppliers :-(
Went outside to have the teas and cake/ice cream, asked if it'd be alright to shared a table with a guy and his young son, "No problem", turns out they were tourist from America. Chatted for a while, they left and as we were finishing an older couple asked if they could share with us, this time it was us with the "No problem". This time they were Australian tourists.
- blimey you get to meet the world at Avebury :-)
